Due Nov 8th

DUE:
Show your quicktime using the HDR you photographed.
(using photos shot by instructor is allowed)

In class:
Today we need to return to the topic of choosing a concept for a VFX shot that we can now match real world lighting with.

We have learned how the following must be correct to match real world lighting:
  • scale
  • color space, Linear
  • render out using 32bit or half float 16bit EXR's
  • we know how to generate our own custom environment lighting using a light probe. (last class)
Need to resolve:
  • rendered frames may not be correct, (frames must be viewed in 32bit viewer)

Spend class researching looking for what visual effect you want to do, when you find your top 3 ideas run them by me.

Next class you will each present your top 3 ideas in PPT form and from that pool we will chose 2 to be made by the class.   Using both a class vote and instructor input (instructor reserves powers of dictatorship) to come to a final choice.

Guidelines:
  • simple is better
  • 5-10 second effect
  • Include sketches and plans of set
  • Explain technically how you will solve the challenge
  • what measurements will you take?
  • Fact: on set you will shoot both a locked off version and handheld version of appropriate
  • Class, together let's find a proper light probe for these 2 projects

Nov 5th

DUE:

  • Present your Quicktime animation to the class
  • Step us through your photoreal settings in your Maya file

Discuss how your workflow for this project went and any issues you had, how did you solve them?

In Class:
We will each make our own HDR image today.

Tools Use:
  • Cannon 7D
  • Light Probe
  • 2 camera stands
  • Photoshop (combine images and clean up)
  • HdrShop (convert Light Probe to Lat/Long)

Test your HDR in your animated spheres scene.

Nov 1st

Show me the list of steps you script is automating. (in text document)

Turn in your script for me to execute.

In class:
Use the Chelsea Stairs HDR and model a simple floor and dark wood textured steps only, you are NOT matching model to photo (use a marble texture like in photo)

Create +20 spheres that are textured and are rigid bodies that roll down your steps and on floor. (length of animation should be short)

Be sure all settings are correct for a photoreal render and render out 32bit EXR files.

Render your frames.

Homework:
  • DUE a quicktime of your movie file, Resolution: Full HD, sorrensen encoded.
  • Complete lesson 6 and 7  (this will help you with your spheres render)

Welcome to Class

Lighting:

It takes time.

I went to the Industry Giants event in Dallas last weekend and listened to Chris Fowler give a talk http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1093680/ about lighting he was responsible for lookdev of Andy.

How long did it take to nail down lighitng in this shot?        3 months,  an entire quarter.

Then they distributed his lights to all shots with Andy in them to keep a consistent look.

Shading:

avoid UVing when you can.

use shaders to do things you might not think of.

Custom DOF shader:
